Shoulder pain

Your shoulder joint is both the most complex and the most mobile joint in your body.  It’s held together with a group of four muscles and the tendons attached to them, which is known as ‘the rotator cuff’.

What does this do?

It protects your shoulder when you use it lift, push, stretch and twist.  However, that doesn’t mean your shoulder is invulnerable, you can still suffer injury resulting from:

  • Forceful over-arm movements such as swimming and tennis
  • Overuse, such as lifting too heavy a load, especially if you’re not used to it
  • Repetitive activities, e.g. people in the building trade often get repetitive strain in the rotator cuff
  • A fall on an outstretched arm
  • Poor posture, like sitting for long periods with raised shoulders and head forward can gradually weaken the tendons.

The result is pain, stiffness and reduced mobility.  Rest won’t necessarily fix the problem.  A sports and clinical massage therapist will use a combination of activities to reduce pain, restore healthy movement and aid recovery of the soft tissue.  These might include:

  • Myofascial release to loosen tightened connective tissue
  • Hot stones to help warm and hydrate muscles before deeper treatment
  • Cupping Therapy to increase blood supply to the area and release toxins
  • Trigger point therapy to address pain in the neck, shoulder and shoulder blade
  • Stretching to restore pliability and strengthen weaker muscles in the upper back and around the shoulder blade.

With the right treatment your rotator cuff will function normally again and you’ll regain a full range of movement without pain.
